Do you have the skills and compassion to support young adults with Profound and Multiple Learning Disabilities (PMLD)? Our college in Barnet is seeking a dedicated and adaptable Teaching Assistant to work with students who require specialised, personalised support to thrive in their educational journey.
Role Overview:
PMLD Support Across the College: Work with multiple students, providing individualised assistance tailored to their physical, sensory, and educational needs.
Assist with Personal Care: Support students with personal care, including toileting, feeding, and hygiene, ensuring their dignity and comfort at all times.
Facilitate Learning and Engagement: Assist in the delivery of sensory-based and practical activities that align with students’ Education, Health, and Care Plans (EHCPs).
Manual Handling Support: Use hoists and other equipment to provide physical assistance to students with mobility needs safely and effectively.
Behaviour Support: Implement positive behaviour management strategies to help students engage and participate. Training in Team Teach or similar approaches is a strong advantage.
Essential Skills and Experience:
Experience with PMLD: Proven experience working with individuals with PMLD in an educational or care setting, including a clear understanding of their complex physical, sensory, and learning needs.
Manual Handling Skills: Confidence in assisting with hoisting and physical mobility. Training is desirable, but can be provided.
Personal Care Confidence: Willingness and sensitivity in assisting students with personal care tasks.
Communication Support: Familiarity with communication aids such as Makaton, PECS, or AAC devices to support non-verbal students.
Teamwork and Collaboration: Work closely with other staff, therapists, and health professionals to provide a holistic approach to student support.
