Job Title: Get Into Teaching - SEN Learning Support Assistant
Are you a graduate who’s curious about teaching, but not quite ready to commit to teacher training? Axcis Education is working in partnership with a respected multi-academy trust in Bristol to offer an excellent opportunity for graduates to gain hands-on experience in schools, particularly within SEND (special educational needs) support roles. This is a chance to explore what a career in education might look like — to “test the waters” before diving into a teacher training programme. About the opportunity Graduates placed through this programme will work as SEN Learning Support Assistants, supporting pupils on a 1:1 or small-group basis. Pupils may have a range of additional needs, including autism, speech and language difficulties, ADHD, or more complex learning profiles. Axcis is supporting schools across both primary and secondary phases, so placements can be tailored depending on your preference and experience. This role offers meaningful classroom experience and insight into: How children with additional needs learn and engage The practical application of teaching strategies and differentiation The rhythm and routine of school life The teamwork behind effective teaching — including collaboration with teachers, therapists, and other support staff This is not a teacher training programme — but for those who enjoy the experience and want to pursue teaching, many of the schools offer progression into training routes via a well-respected provider. Who is this for? This role is ideal for graduates who are: Interested in a future career in education or child development Curious about inclusive teaching and working with pupils with additional needs Looking for real-world school experience to inform their next steps Reflective, adaptable and willing to learn Comfortable getting involved and building relationships with young people While prior experience in schools or care is always a bonus, it’s not essential — what matters most is your attitude, curiosity and commitment to supporting young people. Daily responsibilities may include: Supporting pupils with SEN on a 1:1 or small group basis Assisting with lesson delivery, adapting resources and offering differentiated support Encouraging communication using tools like Makaton, PECS or visual aids Helping to create a calm, inclusive and nurturing classroom environment Assisting with personal care or regulation support, where required Working alongside experienced teachers and support staff to meet individual needs What you’ll gain: First-hand experience of how different pupils learn Exposure to real-life classroom environments Insight into strategies around communication, behaviour, and inclusion A chance to reflect on whether teaching — particularly in SEN — feels like the right path A strong foundation for future study, training or careers in education, therapy or social care Why work with Axcis? Axcis Education is the UK’s leading specialist recruiter for SEND. With long-standing relationships across Bristol and the South West, Axcis provides: Competitive weekly pay (from £13.70 per hour) A friendly, supportive consultant to guide you throughout your placement Opportunities for free training and CPD Access to roles that align with your interests and career goals Clear pathways for progression, if you choose to take that next step into teaching What’s next?
