Job Title: Outdoor Learning Assistant
Outdoor Education Learning Support Weekly Pay: £450/week | Temp-to-Perm Are you passionate about the outdoors and supporting young people with special educational needs (SEND)? Do you thrive in a hands-on, dynamic environment where you can inspire students through nature-based learning? If you're looking for a rewarding role in education that combines your love of nature with your desire to make a difference, this is the perfect opportunity for you! We’re currently seeking a dedicated Outdoor Education Learning Support Assistant to join a vibrant SEND school in BS11. The school is renowned for its commitment to experiential learning and exceptional outdoor facilities, including a Forest School, horticultural areas, and a range of nature-based learning spaces. This school delivers a practical, hands-on curriculum designed to engage students in real-world learning, both inside and outside the classroom. What You’ll Be Doing: As an Outdoor Education Learning Support Assistant, you will be responsible for supporting post-16 SEND students in a range of outdoor and practical learning activities. Your day-to-day tasks will be both engaging and varied, allowing you to make a real impact on the students' learning and development. Supporting Outdoor Learning Activities: You will assist in delivering a practical, experiential curriculum, helping students develop key life skills such as problem-solving, independence, and teamwork. You’ll be actively involved in facilitating activities like gardening, outdoor cooking, building projects, and nature walks, all while ensuring safety and inclusion for each student. Forest School Sessions: Support students in participating in Forest School activities, where they will learn about the environment, explore natural resources, and develop skills such as risk assessment and resilience. You’ll encourage students to engage with nature through structured outdoor play, storytelling, and environmental education, helping them build confidence and emotional regulation. Horticulture & Gardening: Students will be involved in gardening and horticultural projects as part of the curriculum, which allows them to learn about the natural world, sustainability, and responsibility. You’ll assist in planning, planting, and maintaining these areas while encouraging students to take ownership of the spaces. Off-Site Learning Experiences: You’ll organise and support off-site visits to local parks, nature reserves, and other natural environments that enrich students' outdoor learning experiences. These trips will offer students the opportunity to learn about ecosystems, wildlife, and environmental conservation in real-world settings. One-on-One and Small Group Support: You’ll provide individual support to students during outdoor lessons, helping them engage with the curriculum and overcome any challenges they may face. This could involve helping with physical tasks, offering emotional support, or adapting activities to ensure accessibility and inclusion. Promoting Positive Behaviour: You’ll play a key role in fostering positive behaviour and social skills development in students, particularly during outdoor activities. This may involve using proactive strategies to encourage teamwork, respect, and communication among students, while also helping them to navigate social interactions in a supportive manner. Encouraging Emotional Wellbeing: Outdoor education can be a therapeutic experience for many students. You’ll work closely with students to help them build resilience, self-esteem, and emotional regulation skills, ensuring they feel safe, valued, and confident in their abilities. Skills and Experience That Will Help You Succeed: While previous experience in outdoor education or working with SEND students is beneficial, the following skills and attributes will make you successful in this role: Passion for the Outdoors: A strong personal interest in nature and outdoor learning is key to inspiring and engaging students in nature-based activities. A love for the outdoors will help you motivate students to actively participate in lessons and enjoy learning in natural environments. Experience Supporting SEND Students: Experience working with students with special educational needs, especially those with Autism, learning disabilities, or emotional and behavioural needs, is highly beneficial. This could include experience in a school, youth work, or volunteering in outdoor settings. Patience and Flexibility: Working with SEND students requires a flexible and patient approach, particularly in outdoor learning environments where activities may need to be adapted to suit individual needs. Your ability to stay calm and adaptable will help create a positive and inclusive learning space. Communication Skills: Strong verbal and non-verbal communication skills are crucial for interacting with students with varying levels of communication abilities. You should be comfortable using alternative communication methods (e.g., Makaton or visual aids) and able to communicate effectively with students, staff, and parents. Problem-Solving & Initiative: Outdoor learning can often present unexpected challenges, so the ability to think on your feet, solve problems, and take initiative will help ensure students get the most out of their learning experiences. Teamwork: You’ll be working alongside other learning support assistants, teachers, and outdoor educators. A collaborative, team-oriented approach will be essential to ensure that the students receive the best support possible. Physical Stamina and Resilience: As an outdoor education assistant, you’ll be involved in a variety of physical activities, including gardening, hiking, and organising off-site trips. Having good physical stamina and a resilient attitude will help you manage the demands of the role. Organisational Skills: You’ll need to help organise activities, trips, and outdoor lessons. Being organised and detail-oriented will help ensure everything runs smoothly, and that students are safe and well-prepared. DBS Check: A DBS on the Update Service (or willingness to apply for a new one) is required to ensure the safety of all students. Why This School is Special: Outstanding Outdoor Facilities: The school is home to exceptional outdoor spaces, including a Forest School and a garden area recognised by the Royal Horticultural Society. These areas provide a rich and inspiring learning environment for students to explore and engage with nature. Experiential Learning Focus: The school’s curriculum is centred around practical, hands-on learning, helping students to build real-world skills in an environment that encourages curiosity and independence. Dynamic, Active Role: This is a physically engaging, active position, where you’ll be outdoors as much as possible, guiding students through outdoor learning activities that challenge and inspire them. Inclusive Environment: The school is dedicated to meeting the needs of all learners, regardless of ability. A strong emphasis on inclusion ensures that every student has the support they need to succeed. Supportive Team: You’ll join a passionate team of educators and outdoor learning professionals who work collaboratively to provide the best possible education for students. The team is warm, welcoming, and dedicated to fostering a nurturing, positive environment. Why Join Axcis Education? Competitive Weekly Pay: £450/week. Professional Development: Ongoing training and support, including access to Axcis Academy for additional CPD courses. Employee Benefits: Access to holiday pay, pension contributions, and more.
