Job Title: PMLD Teaching assistant

Are you passionate about making a difference in the lives of children with profound and multiple learning disabilities (PMLD)? A dedicated and inclusive special school in Islington is seeking an experienced Teaching Assistant to join their team. This role offers the opportunity to work closely with students in small groups and on a one-to-one basis, providing the personalised support they need to thrive.
The Role
As a Teaching Assistant, you will support children with PMLD, focusing on their unique learning, communication, and care needs. You will work collaboratively with teachers and therapists to implement tailored learning programmes, ensuring each child is given the opportunity to achieve their full potential in a nurturing and supportive environment.
This role requires a hands-on, compassionate approach, and experience in working with children who have complex learning and medical needs is essential. Additional training or qualifications (e.g., Makaton, PECS, manual handling, or sensory integration) would be an advantage.
Key Responsibilities
Provide one-to-one and small group support for children with PMLD, adapting to their individual needs.
Assist with the implementation of tailored learning plans designed by teachers and therapists.
Support students with personal care, mobility, and feeding needs, ensuring their safety and comfort at all times.
Use specialised strategies and resources (e.g., sensory equipment) to engage students and foster their development.
Promote communication skills through tools like Makaton or PECS (training will be provided if needed).
Monitor and record progress, working closely with the wider team to ensure effective support.
About You
The ideal candidate will have:
Experience working with children with PMLD in a school or similar setting – essential.
A compassionate, patient, and adaptable approach.
The ability to build positive relationships with children, families, and staff.
A proactive attitude and willingness to learn, with additional training in areas such as Makaton, manual handling, or sensory integration as a bonus.
Strong communication and teamwork skills.
