Job Title: Secondary Teaching Assistant
Axcis Education are working with a welcoming SEND secondary school in Exeter who are seeking a full-time teaching assistant to join their team. The team are supportive, dedicated, and eager to train you in safeguarding and other policies if you show enthusiasm and build positive relationships with both pupils and staff. This is a short-term role with the opportunity of being long-term for the right candidate. The school is a SEND secondary school easily located in Exeter with bus routes and parking easily accessible. The class sizes are no more than 10 pupils per class with one teacher and 1 teaching assistant. They also have static classes which are catered for highly vulnerable pupils who need more teaching assistants and a tutor in each hub giving emotional, behavioural and educational support. The school have a playground with a climbing frame, they have fidget toys and sensory equipment for the young people. The school operates differently to mainstream secondary schools. In year 7 and 8 they remain in classes and have catch up lessons in core subjects. From year 9 – 10 they become subject based lessons moving around the school. As a teaching assistant you will move around the school with the pupils and attend a range of subjects such as Music, ICT, PSHE and forest school. To be successful in this role you need to be someone who responds to children’s needs, be empathetic and show you care, as well as being able to acknowledge when a child is un-settled preventing them from escalating. All the pupils attending the school have Autism, communication needs and Social, Emotional, Mental Health needs from traumatic backgrounds and are very vulnerable within the community.
